i am the ghost in the shadows The thing about Myka’s ability or power or gift or whatever the hell else you could call it was that it was pickier than most. Not only did she have to focus like she was taking the math portion of a standardized test that she hadn’t studied for, but the light level in the room had to be low, too, else she was effectively powerless, which made it had to cause general mayhem for about 12 hours of the day and in a house occupied by a fairly decent-sized group of fellow gifted individuals. Surprisingly enough, most people prefered to go through their daily routine with the lights on, for whatever reason. At least the library was a bit more empty now that classes were out. All she had to do was pull the curtains closed and she had a decent enough room to practice in.
Back when she’d first developed her, erm, special talent, everything had happened kind of quickly. She’d been giving herself nightmares with the shapes she accidentally painted on the walls of her bedroom and covering herself with absolute darkness while she slept, sometimes waking up with frost on the tips of her eyelashes. She learned to warp shadows easily enough, manipulating their shape to humanoid blobs. And cloaking herself in darkness had pretty much come naturally to her. But for whatever damned reason she just could not find a way to overcome the slightest of light.
Myka was sprawled out over an old couch in the middle of the room, one arm thrown over the back and the other dangling off the side, bottom lip red between her teeth as she strained to pull the shadow of a bookcase across the room ever closer. Sure enough, after thirty seconds and a couple feet of holding her breath, it would melt back to it’s original shape in the slightly-less-dark of the sunlight that somehow made it through the curtains. Each time the curse that slipped out of her mouth was a bit more vulgar and forceful, and each new try sapped a bit more of her energy.
“Well, hell,” she muttered after failed attempt number 9.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Alice"] Woah Mona Lisa, we're guaranteed to run this town.
Evan ran her fingertips over the wallpaper in Phalanx and knew that she would have to get better about writing down Casey’s work schedule. She had thought he was off by now, but he would still be at the coffee shop for another couple of hours. She was still learning her way around the place, and figured that with dating Casey, she might as well figure it out. Anything was better than going home. It was her father’s wedding anniversary, which meant they were going to act sickeningly in love and engage in their favorite pastime, making her and her brother miserable. She opened the door to the library and looked around. It was much smaller than the one at Primrose, but it seemed like people actually used it for more than between the stacks hook ups.
She heard the “oh hell.” from someone and after some searching finally found the pink haired person on the couch. “Having a hard time?” She asked, admiring the other woman’s beautiful pastel hair color. She always thought about doing something like, but she never thought she would be able to pull it off. Even if the look of horror from her step-mother would make it immensely worth it. She leaned against a bookshelf and tried to figure out what the other woman was attempting, and figured that it had to do with her skills. She was fascinated by other people’s skills, especially her boyfriend’s. He could change his appearance at will and she thought that it was amazing.
“I’m Evangeline, by the way.” She grinned and knew that there were more people who lived in Phalanx year round than Primrose. All of her friends were off on family vacations and summers on yachts. Even her best friends were off with their families. She brushed some of her blonde hair from her face and grinned at the other woman, hoping that she could kill some time with her before Casey got there.

i am the ghost in the shadows She’d hooked her mind into the shadow again and pulled it back a good six inches when a voice suddenly appeared from the side, making Myka jump and lose her grip and almost bite through her lip. The shadow sort of bounced back into place like a doorstop someone had kicked. When she landed back on the couch she was sitting up, somehow, one hand clutching her chest like it would calm her racing heart and the other with a white-knuckled grip on the arm rest. It took her more than a few seconds to catch her breath.
“My God, you scared the hell out of me, holy Jesus.” She made a mental note that the library was not as ideal of a place to practice as originally thought. Still too popular with the locals, apparently. Maybe outside would be better? “And, no, to answer your question. I’m not having any, ah... issues,” she lied.
She still hadn’t quite caught her breath yet when the intruder gave her name. Evangeline, or something like that. Whatever it was, it sounded posh. A bit too posh for Phalanx. Myka turned to the stranger; blonde hair and a pretty face, leaning casually against the bookshelf like she hadn’t almost given Myka a fatal heart attack at the ripe old age of sixteen and a half. She could almost smell the money on her new friend. She reminded Myka a bit of her mother’s side of the family, all fancy wine and art galleries and floral perfumes and long, unpronounceable surnames, French in origin.
But she had to be “gifted,” too, or at least related to someone who was, else she likely would’ve flipped had she seen Myka with her shadow. So, Primrose, maybe?
“Mhm. I’m Myka. What brings you to Phalanx?” The last sentence came out a bit harsher than intended, admittedly, but she corrected it with a hopefully more gentle smile.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Alice"] Woah Mona Lisa, we're guaranteed to run this town.
She watched the pink haired woman jump and seemed terrified. Of course she felt bad, but she didn’t realize that she was being that quiet. She bit her lower lip and watched the pink haired woman get her breath back to normal and Evan debated just slipping out of the library and leaving her alone to do what she wanted with the shadows in the library, but she was there and she might as well face the music for what she had done. “I’m really sorry.”
The guilt gnawed at her stomach, but she knew that the other woman would hopefully be alright with Evan killing the time before Casey got out of work with her. Evan pushed herself off from the bookshelf and knew that she could have easily just hid out in Casey’s room while he worked and loaded up all sorts of silly things on his Netflix, but this seemed more social and meeting up with his friends seemed like a good idea before she had to go and try to give one of them a heart attack.
When she heard the name, she was actually thrilled that she ran into this person of everyone at Phalanx. “Myka Shepherd?” She asked, making sure that she got the right person. “I’m waiting for Casey Foster to get home from work. He’s my boyfriend, and we were supposed to meet up.” She explained taking a seat on the couch across from Myka. “It’s really great to finally meet you, Casey’s been talking about you nonstop.” Most everyone knew Casey as CJ, but she always liked his first name.
She hoped that they would be able to get along, and that maybe Myka had heard something about her being a decent enough girlfriend to Casey that the whole heart attack thing would be forgiven.

i am the ghost in the shadows At the very least, the would-be murderer apologized, so that was something. And judging from the way her words came out, she seemed genuinely sorry. “Oh, no, no, you’re one hundred percent okay. I just... was not prepared to be walked in on. At all, let alone by someone who didn’t make a noise until the last second.” She should’ve been, though. Really. The only place completely void of anybody else would probably a closet or something, and even then, there’s always a couple of teenagers looking for privacy from the rest of the house.
Speaking of couples, it seemed she was here for CJ. Seemed the Evangeline in front of her was, apparently, the same Evangeline the boy had been fawning about for a while now. (Why she hadn’t made the connection earlier, who knows.) Huh. Myka had imagined her with a set of feathered wings and a halo, the way he’d been going on about her. The lack thereof was mildly disappointing. Still, nice to finally meet the girl who had him like a caged bird. And better yet, she looked like she was nice enough not to swallow the key yet.
“Yeah, he hasn’t shut up about you, either,” she chuckled out. “Are you, like, magic, or something?” The moment the question was out in the air Myka realized how dumb it was. Duh, she was likely “magic.” Myka and CJ were, too. Hell, who knew how many powered individuals there were in New Orleans alone. “I mean, probably, yeah, or you wouldn’t be here, but did you sneak him a love potion, or something?” Wait-- were love potions real? Probably not, but there’d been a time when Myka thought changing your appearance or manipulating the shadows had been myths, too, and yet she’d been proven wrong. She laughed, partially at her own lame joke and partially at the idea of Evangeline here tiptoeing through the Phalanx Home to pour a vial of liquid love into CJ’s coffee.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Alice"] Woah Mona Lisa, we're guaranteed to run this town.
From the way that Casey talked about his good friend Myka, Evan was terrified of her. She knew that Myka didn’t get close with people quickly, that she was someone who would probably not like her at first, and knowing how close she was with someone who Evan was in love with? It was a lot of pressure. She wanted the pink haired woman to like her and she wanted things to be great. Since it seemed like Myka had forgiven her for the heart attack, she knew that they were at least on their way to Myka not hating her guts.
From what Casey had described of Myka, she was expecting a total badass with a sneer of contempt for everyone and for some reason a leather jacket. Not someone who could be wearing a flower crown and be a faerie princess. She liked this version of Myka better. “Do you mind if I sit with you?” She asked, motioning to the space on the couch that she wasn’t inhabiting.
She blushed a little when Myka insisted that Casey hasn’t been able to shut up about her. She really couldn’t shut up about him. She loved him and she loved spending time with him. When Myka asked if she was magic, she grinned a little and tucked some of her hair behind her ear. “I go to Primrose, so about as magic as you two are.” She moved her hands together, collecting the energy in the air until her skin felt like it was prickling. Like when her hand would fall asleep and then she would move it again. Tiny shocks of electricity just bubbling under the surface as she constructed the image of a small world between her fingers. A beautiful sunset over some trees, birds flying and the sky turning from a lilac purple to bright red. She shook her hands and the illusion disappeared from her hands. “No, no love potion.” She grinned, unsure how she was able to convince him that she was a good person to date. “But he’s the one who makes my coffee, so you might want to ask him that.” She teased, knowing that it was probably true.
@myka 399 NOTES: i really love these two together!

i am the ghost in the shadows Ahh, Primrose, Phalanx’s older, more successful sibling, packed full of rich kids who’d never have to worry about jobs or paying for college. Myka would be lying if she said she wasn’t a little bit sour when it came to those from money, considering she and her family struggled with the bills when she was younger, but Evangeline hadn’t walked into Phalanx with a gasmask or an “ew, poor people” look on her face, so. Maybe there were some good rich people, after all. She motioned for Evangeline to take the spot next to her.
Myka knew there were all sorts of different powers-- CJ, for instance, could change his face to look like someone else, she knew some people could become animals, and some could manipulate various elements, like her own shadows. But Evangeline here had freaking-- she didn’t even know what to call it, but it was so cool. It was so damn cool! Her jaw dropped, involuntarily, and after a couple seconds of stunned silence she managed to mutter out a quiet “whoa.” The little hairs on her arms and the back of her neck stood up. And then the little world vanished, just... gone, like water down a drain. Evangeline might not have used a love potion, but maybe she showed him images of them being a happy couple. Myka wouldn’t have blamed her. She’d use any excuse to do that if she could.
“That was... Wow,” she said, running a hand through her hair. She would’ve kill to have something like that, to be able to create elaborate images from thin air. “You could be the world’s greatest magician, man. I can’t even-- uh, here, gimme a second.” She pointed to a chair tucked into the corner, shadowed by a nearby bookcase, and mouthed “watch this.” She took a deep breath, held it, and then the shadow started to thicken and inky tendrils ran up the chair’s legs until it was swallowed in black. It looked sort of like a void where the chair and it’s surroundings had once been. She let herself breathe again, and the black dissolved.
Myka grinned sheepishly. ”It’s not as useful as, uh, whatever you did, but I think it’s cool enough.”

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Alice"] Woah Mona Lisa, we're guaranteed to run this town.
She could see the sour face that Myka made and she held her hands up a little in peace, she gave a sheepish glance and smiled, “I swear I’m not a snob.” She hoped that Myka would believe her and that hopefully she would be able to prove that to her. She knew that her step-mother and dad would lose her mind if she found out that she was dating someone from Phalanx, a skinwalker none the less. She wasn’t with Casey because she thought it would drive her parents crazy. She knew too many girls at Primrose who would do that. They would date Phalanx guys just to make their parents angry, and she hoped that Casey never thought she would do that to him.
A wave of exhaustion went over her when she sat down on the couch. She put too much detail into showing off for Myka and she knew that she would regret it for a few minutes. She wanted Myka to like her, and she knew that a big part of that was going to be just proving that she had the best intentions with Casey. Even if she was having thoughts about her best friend’s brother. Aden was someone who was a little dangerous and exciting, but Casey was the one she loved. He was the one who cared about her and wanted to be with her more than anything. She smiled at Myka and ran her fingers through her long hair to try to settle her stomach. “Basically, they’re illusions. I can make people see what I want them to.”
“I’ve thought about it.” She admitted with the magician thing, but it seemed like there was too much potential for people figuring out her secret. She didn’t know what happened when people without abilities found out about their world, but she figured that it couldn’t be anything good. Watching Myka move the shadows, she knew that it was amazing. Much better than her ability and given how dense Myka could make the shadows, Evan knew that there were millions of possibilities for it. Being an all powerful ninja warrior was much cooler than some Vegas stage magician.
“It’s amazing. I can only imagine how you figured out you could do that in the first place.” She grinned, leaning back on the plush couch while her stomach settled.
